BAXTER STATE PARK HAS A WILDERNESS AREA OF 282.864 ACRES. THE PARK

 

WAS A GIFT TO MAINE BY THE FORMER GOVERNOR PERCIVAL P. BAXTER. IN 19~ HE

 

BOUGHT 5.968 ACRES WHICH INCLUDED MT. KATAHDIN. THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN IN

 

MAINE. IN 1931 iT WAS GIVEN TO THE STATE OF MAINE AND BY 1933. iT WAS

 

RECOGNIZED AS BAXTER STATE PARK AND THE SUMMIT OF KATAHDIN WAS NAMED

 

BAXTER PEA~ IN THE GOVERNOWS HONOR. IN 1962. A FINAL GIFT OF ?.?64 ACRES

 

WAS DONATED. AFTER THE GOVERNOR’S DEATH. THE PARK’S AREA INCREASED TO

 

284.733 ACRES. BAXTER STATE PARK CAN ACCOMMODATE HIKERS AND

 

PHOTOGRAPHERS. MANY SPECIES OF PLANTS CAN BE FOUND. INCLUDING ORCHIDS.

 

FERNS. AND OTHER PLANTS. BAXTER STATE PARK ALSO HAS A LARGE POPULATION OF

 

 

WILDLIFE. BAXTER STATE PARK IS KNOWN FOR HAVING MANY MOOSE, BLACK BEAR, AND WHITE TAIL DEER.

 

 

BAXTER STATE PARK HAS A GRAND TOTAL OF 46 MOUNTAINS AND 18 OF THEM
