A Fork the River

What is Maine known for? Quiet, remote forests, swift clear rivers, snug snowcapped towns, and an attitude of friendliness that permeates the facade of even the most austere character. All of these qualities can be found in the small town of “The Forks.” It is located at the convergence of the Kennebec River and the Dead River, and is a prime spot for whitewater rafting.

A feature Maine can boast of is the blessing of small towns, or more importantly, small towns with ambience. Not so surprisingly, the town of The Forks employs both of these virtues, as the population is only 35! The town contains one school, one post office, and a rafting company dubbed the River Drivers. Also, scattered among the 31 square miles of forest and river are numerous lodges and restaurants.

All small towns have their local landmarks, and The Forks’ landmark is the foot bridge across the picturesque Kennebec River just before it sluices into the mighty Dead River. In the summer, kids and adults alike flock to this monument to fun during scheduled Indian pond dam releases when the water’s high enough to plummet off the bridge into the balmy summer waters. That is what Maine is all about: personable friendships with neighbors and towns where you know just about everyone.

Have you ever watched a tranquil stream morph, in a heartbeat, into a fluvial terror, describable only by the roaring of the frothy waves? This transfiguration is typical of the one undertaken by the Kennebec River at the time of a dam release. At once the shallow, placid watercourse becomes a torrent that is singularly useful for whitewater
