Maine’s Best Kept Secret

Do you want to know what Maine’s best kept secret is? Do you want to go to a place where you can go swimming, take a rejuvenating walk in the woods, and relax around a crackling campfire? Do you want to go to a place where playing in the mud with a four wheeler is allowed, and getting muddy is fun? This extraordinary place is Balsam Woods Campground in Abbot, Maine. Balsam Woods Campground is truly Maine’s best kept secret.

The memories race through my mind as I recall the experiences I have had there. The first memory that pops into my mind started at the swimming pool. I first learned how to swim at the Balsam Woods Campground pool. I can remember the proud look on my mom and grandparent’s faces as I strutted around the swimming pool with a hint of

accomplishment in my eyes. Another memory that started at the pool was when my nephew learned how to swim. I joined my mom and grandparents in watching him paddle around the pool, a giant grin planted on his face the entire time. I don’t like to take too much credit for it, but I must say it was yours truly who taught him how to swim.

My favorite activity at Balsam Woods Campground is to go four wheeling with my mom and my grandparents. A favorite memory of mine is when my grandfather took me to the top of a mountain. I remember at first clinging to my grandfather in fear I would fall. He kept encouraging me, saying it was okay to let go of him as long as I was careful. I remember looking out upon what lay below me, thinking I could see the whole world. Whenever I think of my grandfather, I always think of that memory. He said memories are precious, so you should always create ones you enjoy making and that will last forever.

If you and your family want to go on a vacation, you could always go to the big, fancy tourist sites. Why not go somewhere personable, where

the people are friendly and welcoming, not too crowded, and where, when you arrive, you know you’ll be able to get a camp site?

Balsam Woods Campground may not be a popular attraction site, or may not be on the list of top 10 places to visit in Maine, but it holds an affectionate place in my heart. It is such an incredible place that when I think of it, memories of laughter, excitement, and togetherness come to mind. A motto of mine has been that once a moment is gone, you can never get it back, so make every moment last and count. The moments and time I have spent at Balsam Woods Campground will forever stay with me. Later on, when everything in my life may change, I will always be able to recall those memories and find happiness.
