Superb Saddleback

Wind in your face. The view of Sunday River while skiing. No, this is not Sugarloaf. Many people would say Sugarloaf is the best place to ski. I truthfully think Saddleback is ten times better and much more affordable. Although Rangeley, Maine, home of Saddleback Mountain, doesn’t have big malls and shopping plazas, it more than makes up for the lack of those by having stunning slopes.

Do you love a good view? If you do, ascend to the top of Saddleback on the Family Secret lift. Once you get there and are about ready to attack the America trail, you see an amazing vista of Sunday River and other mountains. It is shockingly surprising how far you can see from the summit. If you aren’t good at skiing Black Diamonds or the more challenging Double Black Diamond trails, you can always ski the easier America trail, which is for intermediate skiers. It’s really flat so you don’t have to

worry about huge, steep hills. If you do like steep hills, I would recommend Tightline, which looks steep, but is much more challenging.

About two years ago we were skiing on Tightline and some other people went on the trail before us. It literally looked like they were dropping off the face of the earth. Although it looked scary, I got the guts to go on it. If you chicken out, you can always

ski back over to Supervisor and take the cross-cut path to meet up with the rest of yourgroup. One thing I really like about Saddleback is that most of the time you don’t meet up with snowboarders. I really dislike it when I fall because of a crazed snowboarder. If you’re a daredevil like me, you can check out the challenging terrain park. Trust me, it’s the most fun you’ll ever have on a pair of skis, as it has humongous jumps.

How many of you get lost just strolling in the lodge at Sugarloaf? I know I do. Saddleback has a small, but remarkably roomy lodge so you won’t get lost. I think having one lodge is easier so that you are able to remember which lodge you’re in, which definitely helps. If you don’t want to stay in the lodge, if you don’t ski or snowboard, then there are many other activities you can participate in within walking distance. A cross country facility and a variety of locally owned shops, restaurants, and a movie theater are all conveniently located just two miles down the road.

Wether you’re a skier or snowboarder, hop on over to Saddleback and hit the slopes. I guarantee you will have the most fun you’ve had in a very long time. Even if you aren’t an accomplished skier or snowboarder, you can always attempt the easier scenic trails. If it’s time for a change or challenge in your life, you should give Saddleback a try. You won’t regret it!
