Social Networking Sites:

Social networking sites are beneficial to the world in many ways. Although they seem to have a dark side the positives outweigh the negatives in almost every situation. Children, adolescents, parents, teachers, celebrities, businesses, etc. all use them, so there must be some positives about the sites, why else would we continue to use them? There are many uses for social networking sites such as contacting other people, promoting businesses, games, instant messaging, and video chatting are all things that come along with social networking sites today, they are all good things that are part of owning an account on Facebook, Myyearbook, Myspace, Tumblr, and other social networking sites.

Contacting people is an excellent reason to have a Facebook, Myspace, Myyearbook, etc. After a busy day there’s nothing anyone looks forward to more than relaxing or hanging out with friends but sometimes you just don’t have the energy or ambition to go anywhere. So most people go home and use social networking sites, This gives them a way to relax and have fun. They can IM and video chat with friends or they can sit back and play a game. Social networking sites are also useful to stay in touch with old high school or college friends, business associates, family, or spouses. It also gives the world a way to communicate with other people all over the world free or to make new friends that could last a lifetime. I use it, my family and friends use it, my teachers and peers use it and pretty much the rest of the world use social networking sites as a way to stay in touch, so ask yourself, what is the harm in having a Facebook, Myspace, Myyearbook, etc.? Promoting businesses is easy with social networking sites. It’s an efficient and useful way to make yourself known, especially if you are just starting a business because there
Knowles 2

are ads plastered all over social networking sites and when typing in the search bar (found on most sites)

when you type certain words similar groups and pages that start with the same letter or have a similar title pop up and if you are interested you can usually view the page, unless it is private or blocked. Business are always looking for new ways to advertise, why not make a like page or fan page on Facebook? Millions of people are on Facebook, Myyearbook, Myspace, etc. everyday, they are bound to see your pages. Who knows, it could turn into a way to apply for jobs one day, by video chatting and messaging your application/s over. Businesses could use it as a way to make themselves more widely known. This is why social networking sites can come in handy for businesses.

Even if you aren’t interested in having a social networking site for meeting people or putting yourself out there, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one. Maybe you’re just into playing games that are on the sites. Playing games is an easy option on social networking sites and you don’t have to worry about the hassle of being bothered by anyone. You can make yourself your own private account and ignore every friend request that comes your way. Social networking sites aren’t just about adding everyone in site and being friends for life. Having a profile on the sites is a great way to enjoy all the fun of playing games and forget about the other people out there.

Instant messaging is a great way to keep in touch with anyone you know. Sometimes it can be harmful if you talk to the wrong people, but there are always positives to it. Talking on the phone has become a past time and texting and instant messaging are the fads of the century. Where people spend a lot of their time on social networking sites to begin with, they figure instant messaging is easier than going to grab a telephone because you’re already there. Plus, since most social networking sites are free so is the instant messaging. This is why over half the world uses social networking sites.
Knowles 3

Not only can you IM people but recently sites have put up a video chatting app that allows people to video chat with any of their friends. This has become useful to a lot of people, because people have always had to turn to MSN, Skype, etc to video chat with other people now all you have to do is use your everyday Facebook, Myyearbook, etc. account instead of signing up for a whole other account.

So, next time you think about the negatives of social networking sites think about the positives and what they could do for you. Over half of the world uses social networking sites. Why shouldn’t you?

Social Networking is Good for Society

Social networking has become a way of life for over half of the United States population. While it has only recently, within the past few years become mainstream, social networking has been in existence for decades. Social networking in its present state is now virtually worldwide. Although there are many dangers associated with social networking, the benefits outweigh the downfalls.

Today, there are hundreds of social networking sites on the World Wide Web. Most of these, Facebook for an example, make it easier for a person to communicate and share information with friends and family members who have either moved, or live a great distance from you. My Uncle lives in Virginia, and through Facebook I’m able to keep up with him. Facebook has many features to aid in catching up with loved ones, including messaging, picture and video sharing, commenting and overall catching up, and now, almost all social networking sites feature chat and messaging. Most of America currently possesses a social networking site account, with seventy three percent of the United States’ internet population on Facebook at least once per month. With the statistic so large, the chances of talking to, sharing and catching up with an old friend or family member from far away are likely to be high. Given that fourty-six million American citizens check their social media profiles daily (Social Media Stats for the C-Suite, Jeff Esposito), updates are likely to be frequent or common. These and many other statistics are all factors to revamping one’s relationship with their loved ones.
Social networking has become an aid to promoting business. In 2011 alone, marketers increased their social media usage by an outstanding seventy-five percent. Another statistic shows that ninety- seven percent of top United States charities utilize Facebook in marketing efforts. Market America, a web portal for buying items of name brand at cheaper prices, is an example of this. Although widely known, Market America had never found success until social networking became unbelievably popular. Now, most have checked out, or have at least heard of Market America, and other sites like this. Thirty five percent of small businesses nationwide have utilized social media for marketing purposes. Businesses, small or large, using Facebook as an example again, can create a “like page” for their business. On this page, a person can update current job happenings, promote their business, pictures of the job in action, write about the job, share the page with others in hopes of interest, and much more. It has been proven that fourtyseven percent ofjournalists have used Twitter as a source for a story topic. This means that almost half the journalists in America have been inspired to write about something because of a status, picture, video, or other feature on Twitter. A final statistic shows that sixty-one percent of Facebook users who have liked a brand on a “like page”, are more likely to purchase from that brand. With all of these statistics and stories, how could you not want to create a page for your business on one of the numerous social networking sites around today? Chances are, within days, your business will see an increase in consumer interest (Social Media Stats for the C-Suite, Jeff Esposito).

Have you ever met somebody because of a social networking site? Meeting new friends has become a common effect from sites such as Facebook. One of my Facebook friends is a mutual friend of someone I know in person. With eighty-two percent of people eighteen to twentynine years of age using some form of social networking today, it is easy to meet someone of my
Jordan 3

age, who I would not have known about before. Even though there are dangers with meeting people online, privacy settings, parental advice and taking caution can make even the most personal aspects of someone’s life personal. A person should be aware of the dangers of social networking before they choose to create an account. Facebook and most other social networking sites feature privacy settings that can easily and quickly be set to ensure a person’s safety online. With these privacy settings, a social network user can choose who they want to view all of the posts, pictures, videos, etc.The average Facebook user doesn’t personally know one-fifth of the people listed as friends on their profile. Research has found that about ten percent of the social network population will meet their best friend online (Ben Quinn, The Guardian). Therefore, social networking has been a major aid for teenagers and even adults in meeting new people.

Social networking is for everybody. Networking sites are easy to use. Fifty-seven percent of those with an account on any given social networking site are 35 or older (Study: Age of social network users by Pingdom). Some elderly people use social networking sites as something to do, considering most are retired and would have nothing else or at the least, very little to occupy their time.

How many times have you searched somebody famous, and ended up on a social networking site? Twitter and Youtube are both ways to easily access the newest buzz on your favorite bands, actresses and actors, etc. Famous people, like businesses, and those aspiring to become something promote themselves on sites such as these. Justin Bieber as an example, proves that through Youtube, a person can become famous over night. Stars also update concert dates, life situations, pictures and other things onto social networking sites, Twitter in particular, making it easy for fans to know the current happenings in a famous persons life, good or bad.
So, as you can see, there are many reason why social networking can be good for society. Although there are downfalls accompanied with social networking, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites were made to be used for staying in touch with family and friends or to make new friends. But like anything they can be used in ways that were not originally intended like bullying, stalking, and harassing people. Some people think they can be dangerous to use, but it is just like any other piece of technology, it is only dangerous if used improperly. There are countless examples of this, like a car, it can be used as a very convenient means of transportation, but if it is used improperly, it will not only be dangerous to you but to anyone else on or near the road. As long as we use these things carefully, considerately, and follow all the rules then the benefits outweigh the risk.

Social networking sites helps you to stay in touch with the people you know. You can find long lost friends and reconnect with them via sites like Facebook, even though they might live on the other side of the planet. It is also a good way to make new friends or to communicate with people who are from different parts of the world and learn about how their culture is different from ours. You should be careful who you make friends with though because it is very easy for people to lie on social networking sites. They might not be who they say they are and there is no way to verify that unless you know them personally.

Social networking sites are a good way to get information. Most of your friends are likely to live in your area so you can get up to date on local news or gossip. It is always best to get your information first hand. Otherwise it is likely to be biased or they might not tell you all the facts and that is how rumors get started. People formulating opinions on misinformation is always going to be a problem no matter what means of communication is used.

Some people argue that social networking sites are too impersonal and think that people should talk face to face instead. Now some social networking sites have video chats. So people can talk face to face through a computer. You can see who you are talking to despite the fact that they might be living thousands of miles away.

Facebook is a good way to promote business, especially since it is the most popular social networking site. One in every thirteen people on earth have a Facebook account and there are more than five hundred million Facebook users, so what would be a better way to advertise or promote a business than having a Facebook account?

I think that social networking sites are a good thing. They are a convenient way to stay in touch with friends and family. There are video chats so you can talk face to face. They are a good way to get information and gossip. They are an excellent way to promote business.

Socia’ Networking

How many people have a Facebook or Twitter account? Millions and millions, from normal people like you and me, to big shot celebrities and athletes. Some people can’t step away from the computer without tweeting what they’re doing or posting a status. It’s a great way to keep connected with family and friends; however, you need to be careful when using sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Keep in mind anyone can have a Facebook or Twitter — there are no restrictions. You need to be careful what you post and who can see your post, photos and comments. Social networking is a great way for people to keep in contact with one another and see what’s going on, but you need to be careful at the same time.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are a good way to keep in contact with friends and family. I use my Facebook all the time to talk to friends and even family who don’t live around here. I think that the communication aspect of Facebook is the only really good one. Facebook has several ways to communicate including chat, which gives you the same fast communication in the form of instant messaging. Messages is another way, which is almost like e-mail, it’s not as fast, but it’s easier for longer messages. Wall posts are the last way; on Facebook each person has a wall where they post pictures, statuses and whatever else. You can write on someone’s wall and everyone who is their friend can see it. Overall there are many ways that you can communicate on Facebook, which makes it easy to talk to people and keep up with friends and family. Facebook is also a good way to meet new people. I don’t mean that you meet people you’ve never even heard of before, I mean people that you’ve seen from school or other schools close by. I know for me I’ve added and been added by people who I’ve seen at basketball games or school functions, and actually became friends with them. It’s a good way to meet people that you’ve seen around, but don’t really know!

There are downs to social networking and, it can be very dangerous if you don’t use it correctly; you need to be extremely careful on who you add as a friend and who you talk to on chat or message. Remember anyone can have a Facebook account, which means that anyone can try and request you as a friend; if you don’t personally know or have heard of the person do not add them. I get requests from random people that I have never heard of all the time — I just hit the ignore button when I get those types of requests. It doesn’t matter how nice someone sounds, if you don’t know them, don’t talk to them! Children and adults have been abducted due to the poor decisions they made with Facebook. You start talking to someone you don’t know, they ask you to meet up, and then no one ever sees you again. It sounds crazy but it happens more than you think.

In conclusion, I believe that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are a great form of communication, for friends and family. I also believe that it has a dangerous side too, if it is not used properly. I think the pros overcome the cons in this particular situation, because of the great aspects of communication. I know for me I wouldn’t even talk to some of my family members if it wasn’t for Facebook. As long as you are careful what you post, comment and say on social networking sites, you shouldn’t have any problems. Just keep in mind anyone in the world can have a social networking account! Be careful who you choose to add as a friend and talk to.

Social Networking

Can you believe that one out of every thirteen people have a Facebook account? That is crazy. However, I believe that it is a good thing to have a Facebook or any other social networking site. They have their advantages and their disadvantages. People could go on for hours trying to convince you that they are not good for people to use, but here is the real deal, they are completely fine to use! I know that people worry that they are going to get stalked or that their personal stuff will come to surface, but as long as you set your profile on private and don’t accept any friend requests that you do not know, then you should be fine!

Many people have friends that live in other states or other countries. Social networking sites help those people keep in touch with them and talk quickly. I know that I have friends that live in South America and I can get on Facebook and talk to them or look at pictures. It’s a great way to keep in touch and make plans for when I am coming down to visit again. Another example of this is when soldiers are stationed in a different country or difterent state, it makes it easier for them to see their family and children. When they are gone for so long it’s nice to talk and see what they are doing and maybe even when their coming home. You can also play games online for free, which is good because then you can be on Facebook talking to people while playing a game and having some fun at the same time.

These sites make it easy to get online and get information that you need. A lot of times when I need to know what time a game starts I get on Facebook and someone has posted something about it. You can also make events such as birthday parties or graduation parties and send your friends invitations online. It will give you the date, time, location, and most of the time tell you when to bring if you need to bring anything. This makes it quick and easy to get your information.

Social networking sites are a good way to keep memories forever. You can make photo albums and name who is in them, when they were taken, and where they were taken. If you are worried about a bad picture of you getting on the site or one you just do not want to publish, then you can either untag yourself in them or you can make it so you have to confirm every picture of yours that someone wants to tag. At the end of the year you can go back and look at all of the pictures you took. I have pictures of cheering competitions, basketball games, summer, Christmas, etc. Every time you update your status it stays on there forever. On Facebook there is a new timeline layout. You can see everything you have done since you got your Facebook account. That includes status updates, pictures, who you become friends with and things you have commented

on.    It really is a cool way to see how you have changed over the years.

So, in the end it is up to you. Do you think that social networking sites are good or bad? You have the seen the pros to this topic and now it is up to you to think of the cons. I realize that everyone is different and some people just do not like social networks, but I would really consider giving it a try. They are very neat and the more you use them it the, the easier it gets. So go make a Facebookf And don’t forget to add me;)

Did you know that Facebook has 400 million users? Or that the average person spends 55 minutes a day logged in to a social networking account? Have you heard that approximately 50 million tweets are sent per day, averaging to about 600 per second. According to graphics.ms 73% of teens and young adults are a member of at least one social networking site. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow you to keep in touch with friends and family no matter location, or keep up to date with your favorite authors, actors, and artist. Most websites involve uploading pictures, personal information and interests, while giving you the power to view other members. Celebrities often use Facebook or twitter to include their fans in upcoming shows, tour dates or appearances. Many celebrities are avid users of social networking sites, even the President of the United States Barack Obama has accounts on both Facebook and twitter.

Facebook and Twitter can be a great social pieces of technology when used properly but they include many risks and dangers. The internet can become addictive and time consuming. When using social networking sites you are putting your self out to millions of people all over the world. You have no control of who accesses the internet and without proper security settings there is little control on who can view your social updates. Many people accept friend request of strangers to view or follow their profiles without knowing who they are, many people do this to increase their number of followers or friends. Carelessly allowing others to view your profile can give out your social information defeating the purpose of privacy settings.

Do you believe that bullying only happens on playgrounds or during school, as computers have grown in technology so has bullying. Bullyingstatistics.org took a survey revealing that 50% of all young adults have been cyber bullied or participated in cyber bullying.Cyber bullying is a form of bullying that takes place over social media accounts or through text messages. In the US there are over 4,400 suicides a years due to cyber bullying.

Taking into consideration the risk and dangers, I find that social media is a foe to the population, it has few positive upbringings that are outweighed by many cons. People often lose desire to have verbal conversations when at the click of a button your message can be sent.

“I’m not a Facebook status — you don’t have to like me”- Wiz Kalifa

Nowadays instead of saying what’s your address so I can write you, people are saying how do I spell your name on Facebook. Although Facebook has its dangers, most of us wouldn’t know what to do without it, or even how to spend our time. The challenge in this essay is choosing a side. As times goes on, more and more people are creating Facebook, Twitter, My yearbook and many other accounts which creates more dangers, but also creates more ways to keep in contact and keep up with the world. These social networking sites are so useful in everyday life, people overlook the dangers.

Social Networking sites are most commonly pegged as dangerous to younger people, but many of these sites have chat and that makes it easy to find homework assignments or find out when practices and games are. Many older people find that the games that these sites let you play are fun and are very addicting. Social networking helps you see how your life has changed since years prior and helps you get in touch with old friends from past years. Social networking sites let you see pictures of friends and family and how they have grown over the years and how their lives have been over the years.
While there are many people who want to use the sites for the wrong reasons, there are things that can help you keep these people form seeing your profile. Many people don’t know that you can set your privacy settings so that only the people that you want to see your profile can see it. There are things that you can do to make your online experience safe and fun.

Also another thing that can be used to your advantage is blocking people so that they won’t even know that you exist. But when someone tags you in their photos that means that other people can see you on their site and what you look like. If you have a picture that you don’t want to be seen of you or made known, you have the option to untag yourself and make it so it’s not seen on your profile.

In closing my essay I would like to say that, yes these site may be dangerous, but on a whole if used in the right way, these sites will be helpful to your everyday life.

Social Networking

Did you know that six hundred million people visit Facebook each month and half of those six hundred people come back every day? Unfortunately, I’m one of those people. Although facebook, twitter, or even myspace is a great way to keep in touch with family and friends, it can also be a person’s worst enemy. Over 40% of all teenagers with internet access have reported being bullied online during the past year. Many teens have committed suicide for being teased and made fun of on the internet.

When using a social network, you need to be aware of anything you may create, type, or post because you’re letting the whole world know exactly what may be going on in your life. In my opinion, I think there are more cons than pros in this situation because people always tend to think that they are more tough behind a keyboard and a computer. I can guarantee that 90% of people who talk down to someone online, wouldn’t do say it to the person’s face. Usually people don’t take in to consideration what they are saying and if it’s appropriate to say, whereas, if it was in person, they would take the time to think it over.

On a more personal note, I’ve been bullied online before and it’s been because of fighting. I don’t understand why people would rather argue more about the fighting online, rather then just confronting the person face to face and resolve what ever the differences in the fight are. This is a case similar to a teen named Phoebe Prince. After being taunted and teased for so long, she finally decided she couldn’t handle it anymore and chose to take her own life because of it. Bullying now a days is far more worse than it was a few years ago because now people get online and usually say things they don’t mean, or do it to make it seem like they’re tough. Harsh words cut deeper than a sharp dagger and if someone takes their own life because of someone else’s actions towards them, then it’s just the same as murder. I think social networking sites are more harmful, then useful because many people take risks by putting their every day lives on the internet. What most people don’t know is is that social networking can take over the majority of your time, and it can be very dangerous making your self known on the world wide web.

Do you have a Facebook account? Well this is probably a dumb question right? Because 1 out of 13 people have a Facebook account. 500,000,000 people have a Facebook account world wide (“Facebook Statistics, Stats & Facts For 2011”). So it’s more than likely that you have one. Although Facebook has its cons, it also has its pros, like meeting new people from another school or even keeping in touch with a family member who is on duty in a another country.

Social networking sites have kept family members from Maine to Iraq together. They can talk to each other and find out how they are doing without making a phone call. They can just

type to each other without any hang ups or drop calls. It can keep a war hero in touch with his son, daughter, or wife. It’s not just for kids to get on there it’s also for older people who want to keep in touch with old friends and old classmates from their past.

Some people like to use social networking sites to keep up with what’s going on, like Twitter, people follow their favorite athletes to find out what they have been doing. Some athletes, actors, and many famous people use Twitter to let their fans know what they have been doing and what they do when they are not on T.V., playing basketball, or acting.

On Facebook people can look on other’s profiles and see their pictures of them or their family. This can let family members or family friends see them even if they live in Maine and the other lives in New Mexico. It’s really just a good way of keeping families together if they live far apart from each other.

The pictures privacy settings can be made so that only people you want can see your pictures, so if you wanted only your family members to look at your pictures you can just go to settings and fix it.

Social Networking: A Positive and Necessary Advancement

On May 24, 1844 Samuel Morse transmitted the first message via telegraph in the United States. This historic achievement changed the way nations of the world interacted and had an everlasting effect on our country’s economy. The telegraph also furnished Americans with the freedom to expand and communicate. Today, social networks such as Facebook and Twitter aim to provide these same freedoms online; they facilitate communication, transcend space and time and allow for a more connected world society.

The unifying effects of social networking sites are evident in all realms of life, across all borders. In countries where the media and largely, public opinion, is controlled by the government and often corrupt officials, Facebook and Twitter act as an outlet for suppressed populations to communicate, giving those without a voice, a voice. The uprisings in Libya and the Occupy Movement are two prime examples of how social media websites have provided people with the means to connect on a large scale. We are now able to gain direct access to and information about the lives of people on other continents. In that sense, social networking has supported the liberation and informing of peoples from all walks of life.

Social networks have also provided us with the means of bettering our society on an individual scale. The constant connection that Facebook and Twitter provide persuade us to be more open and empathetic to those around us. They facilitate an increased awareness in the people we live, work and spend time with. Therefore, we become more interested in our environment and more willing to work towards improving it, bettering ourselves in the process.

Many cry that Facebook and Twitter have changed us, but in reality, it is not that we have changed, but rather that these social networking sites, with their ability to facilitate an immediate, world-wide interaction, have changed society. Since the array of social networking sites began to appear over the past decade, the possibilities of communication have been fundamentally changed. Time and space are no longer binding issues. To talk to a friend in Australia while at home in Maine, all that is needed is an internet connection and a Facebook account. However, while social networking sites have changed the way in which we communicate, they have not affected our reasons for doing so. Humans have adapted to a world in which Facebook and Twitter have become important means for communication, but that does not mean that human interaction and communication has changed fundamentally.

Social networking sites, overall, have had a positive effect on society. They have created an online world in which no one is isolated, be it geographically, economically or socially. Most importantly, they have allowed suppressed peoples to rise up against adversity and individuals to improve their lives through online interaction. Social networking has changed society, just like the telegraph before it, and as a human race, we must reach out and accept all it has to offer.
